Bought a really old French racing bike. Converted it to fixed and have been riding it no issue for some months. Last week the end cap started unscrewing while I was out about 5km from home. I feared it was going to fall apart mid way home so set about the task of replacing the bottom bracket..

Took it all apart this morning to find this weird curved end cone. I considered hammering the thing out but thought better of it and took it to a repair shop.

I couldn't think of any way to remove the old housing to put a cartridge style one in? Is there some sort of crank puller style tool for bottom brackets? Thoughts?

A really big nut and bolt, probably with some washers sandwiching the cup, will get it turning. Google Sheldon Brown Fixed Cup Tool

Don’t hammer it! BB cup removal tools exist. You can make one. That might do the trick.

Beware of odd threading in older French bikes. 1980 and older would be concerning. It might be worth trying to use what you’ve got with a bit of Loctite to keep that cup from wandering. Kinda permanent but might be an ok bodge.
