Picked this rangitoto up for free a month ago and decided to use it as an experiment for testing all of the seatpost removal tips. I’m sure lots of methods work great when you have more than an inch of post available, but this thing was DEEP in there (see 2nd pic) so a 9” sawzall blade and stab saw methods were insufficient and I ended up going with the lye bath. I’m surprised the paint survived, just had the sizing sticker get ruined.

I will say that I wasted a lot of time and lye doing too diluted a mixture. Ended up with around 1.5:1 and that was WAY better. Actually generated some serious heat which likely also helped.

Anyway, step 0.5 complete, now to turn this neglected bike into something fun and versatile!

  1. It’s a good month for saving old Gary Fishers.. I pulled an Aquila out of a dumpster, but fortunately for me, the seatpost came right out.
