Just for starters, you need a derailleur and shifter unless you run it as a single speed and a rear brake. Good luck!
Whoever had it before you turned it into a budget single speed. So you can do the same by installing the chain onto whichever cog its the tightest on, and then sliding the rear wheel back to tension the chain.
But if you actually want more gears, you’re going to need a lot. Front and rear derailleur, shifters, cable housing, cable, rear brake caliper, rear brake lever.
“Claw” type rear derailleur if you want one
As a former bike shop mechanic, all I’d say is: don’t try to get modern parts for this. You’ll end up upgrading a thing so it will be compatible with that other thing, which means you have to get a thingie to make the two work together but in reality just getting old parts will be so much easier. And yes, you can get a derailleur that will attach in the dropout behind the axle and boom….golden.
I would decide if you want a geared road bike or single speed. If you are building a geared bike with modern components, you’re looking at wheels, shifters and levers, derailleur(s), chain, cassette, brakes, tires and crank set. Basically everything except the frame, fork, seatpost and bars.
