  1. Does it still put force on the disc? You’re bottoming it out, this side should be as “loose” as possible. The other side has a 5mm hex key slot that moves the other pad closer.

    The snap is the spring inside the arm the has dislodged from the brake body.
    Most likely the fixed pad (pad closest to spokes) is worn enough to cause the actuating arm to rotate past its intended range.

    I’ve reset the brakes before, but when it come to well worn brakes, usually the best option is to spend $30 on a set of Avid BB5, which are, in my opinion, the best option for a base level mechanical disc brake.
    In the meantime, reset your caliper by loosening the mounting bolts, setting your fixed pad closer to the rotor, and recenter the caliper. Have as much meat if the fixed pad visible and have the actuating pad set so the arm is in its furthest open position.

  3. I think the ball bearings are over running the ramps. You need to adjust the pads to be closer to the disc. Do not do that by tightening the cable.
