      Garmisch-Partenkirchen is by far the most overcrowded market town in Bavaria. Its small historic center—with the famous Lüftlmalerei murals and beautifully decorated balconies—consists of barely four streets and can be walked through in less than five minutes if the streets aren’t clogged with tourists. Despite the claim of being in the heart of the Alps, the town actually sits at the northern edge and forms a major traffic bottleneck. Every weekend during ski season and throughout much of the summer, this leads to massive traffic jams that often stretch over 50 kilometers. Driving from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen can easily take more than five hours. Only north–south traffic is redirected around the center; the rest passes straight through the town, resulting in urban gridlock. Parking is scarce and often reserved for residents. This is the reality of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
