Hi, I picked up campagnolo centaur 10 speed (cranks are chorus tho) and zonda wheels, both from 2004, for a nice price and repaired it. (Pretty nice that you can still buy original spare parts for 2004 groupset from campagnolo service shops!) Then I stumbled upon this beautiful Masi frame that seemed perfect for this build, but its a bit rusty.

So my question is how big of a deal it is and how to preserve it and not destroy the paint job too much in the process? My only idea so far was to sand the spots down with a dremel, polish it and make just a clear coat. Is that viable? Or the clear coat wont stick without the primer? Or just sand it and let it be?

I have some old steel bianchi with naked steel in some spots and its not rusty since its ridden in good weather only.

Thanks for the suggestions.

  1. That’s rust bubbling up from under the paint which means you have 2 choices

Either bite the bullet and have the frame stripped, treated & repainted. Won’t be cheap but it’s the best long term solution.

Or find some touch up paint in the correct colour and treat spots as they appear. Would need to carefully rub down, treat, prime & paint. Cheaper but because corrosion is coming from under the existing paint it would be ongoing until it reached the point you bit the bullet and had the entire frame refinished.
