What do you reckon I should be paying for this bike? The 170mm zeb seems to be too much travel for this bike but unsure if that would actually be an issue or not. I think it originally had a 130mm fork.
Listing: Full carbon marin rift zone 27.5 trail bike barely ridden for about a year. Brand new rockshox 170mm zeb up from and a 140 fox float in the rear. Dropper post. Front tire is brand new. Have one for the rear just haven’t put it on yet. The fork alone is right around $1000.

Asking price started at $1750 and is now at $1500.
buying second hand carbon frames scares the crap outta me personally. If you do wanna pull the trigger, take as much time as you can, maybe bring a flash light, and really really make sure there are no cracks or damage to the carbon fiber. Especially since it seems like this bike is running a fork that alters the geometry outside of its intended limits.
It’s definitely overforked which changes the geo. With it being a 2021 I would not pay more than 1000-1200 max. Marin claims that the lifetime of a carbon bike is 5 years. Also inspect it for cracks or have it looked over by a bike shop.
I have the 29er 2023 model, it’s a great bike but that is way, way over forked. The stock fork is 130mm, you can usually get away with 10-20mm of additional travel, above that you run the risk of stress cracking your frame because of how it changes the geometry.
The Rift Zone has had some history of cracking at the head tube too and that fork would cause a lot more stress in that area. I’d look it over closely to make sure there’s no stress cracking in that area. Otherwise it’s a pretty good deal and you could probably sell the fork or have it set to 150 if you want it a little rowdier.
Another thing to look out for is the rear and front wheels are different. Could be they just got a good deal on individual wheels, or they totally thrashed one of them and swapped it.
No way to tell unless you see it in person.
I’m generally an over fork fan, but that’s pushed the boat out a bit too far
Alpine Trail XR if you want to ride that amount of travel
I really appreciate all the feedback and input. Definitely confirmed my suspicions about the fork. Too many potential issues with frame cracks and I didn’t even notice the wheels being different. I think I’m going to get a Giant Trance X Advanced Pro 29 SE because they are marked down to $3200 currently. Carbon frame, handlebars, and wheels with top notch components from what I can tell. And it’s new! Cheers
Thats like triple overforked…..and honestly id be a little skeptical that it wasnt well taken care of if the previous owner chose such an inappropriate fork for it. Like theyre either meme’ing, or brand new to the sport and dont know why that might not be the best choice….either way its a red flag
140 rear is suspect, the RZ came stock with a 120 rear, I don’t think the frame would accept a longer stroke rear shock without issues.
I run my 2021 RZ with a 140mm fork which is 10mm over but feels pretty good. I think 150mm would be acceptable as well.
TBH this sounds like it belonged to a kid or someone who doesn’t understand bikes very well. Maybe pass.
