Southampton is regarded by crime rate UK has the most dangerous town in the county of Hampshire.
Despite having a prestigious university and numerous historical sites, Southampton is seen as run down.
Is this true?
I decided to investigate with a local guide!

hello and welcome to Southampton I’ve heard a lot about this city some really good things and some really bad things some people say there’s a really nice University here some lovely old buildings and some people say there’s complete hell hole join me today as we find out spare any change you’re right mate spare any change please sir sir spare any change pleas you please sir please any change spare any so introduce yourself my friend hello I’m your local guide for today he he’s not I’m not I’m not from here but he has lived here for quite a few years so he’s going to show us to the worst places and the best places and when I mean Southampton is a mixed reputation let me show you this got a lovely modern building here there’s a lot of gentrification here but at the same time you’ve already got two abandoned buildings there it’s going to be interesting to sus this place out you’ve got new buildings really old buildings and ancient buildings all in one yeah it’s uh there’s lots of things to do here like um so I think we found the chea house as you can see I’m only joking it’s that one there in the distance let’s go and check it out what can you tell me about the chuda house local guys so um back in the chuda times um there was a man that used to live here um it was his chuda house um and it’s still here chuda house well first things first I wanted to say we’ve just had a lovely meal on a pint at the old weather spoons and I must say everyone’s quite nice there we had a chat with one or two locals the vibe is generally quite nice saying that I have heard it’s one of the most dangerous cities in all of Hampshire so once again I have no idea what to make of this place what would you say about Southampton you say it’s good we say it’s bad somewhere in the middle somewhere in the middle I would say it’s not um it’s a place yeah and we’re in that place right now find out more here we are in the che the house I think it’s closed today by the looks of it but nonetheless it’s very beautiful and then just across here you have the complete contrast is that was the first thing you said as well actually wasn’t it the complete contrast youve got the semi new buildings there super super beautiful old buildings and then you’ve got these very sort of mediocre buildings next to it there’s a bit of a contrast to this place there really is who said Southampton was bad we got some beautiful ancient ruins over here oh this but this is fascinating we’re in some old ancient ruins here I don’t really know anything about it to be honest but it’s very beautiful and you can just walk in on it I mean there’s literally buildings that have been built around the old ancient ruins the old war City from what I’ve heard that is pretty cool look you could even go could even go down here all right sor justce yeah I was just have a nice they’ve concreted it up let’s have a look you see how short people were like my head would not fit through this at [Music] all MTV Welcome to My Crib check this out you got a lovely Tuda house here we’re in Castle Gate now which I believe is the main sort of town center this is behind all the shops though you’ve got the world’s ugliest building there telephone boxes that haven’t been vandalized yet which is a first so it doesn’t really feel so far we are going to go to the most dangerous neighborhood in Southampton but so far it doesn’t feel like it’s the most dangerous town in Hampshire I mean gosport wipes the floor you know in terms of how dangerous it feels right but there we go these are sort of the the outer walls up believe very [Music] beautiful but one thing I have noticed unfortunately about this city is there are so many abandoned shops it is a passing with these Seaside towns due to taxation a few other issues but there’s so many literally just this entire Street down here there abandoned shops and as we were driving through sort of the outskirts you’re literally driving through and this entire roads are just abandoned shops albeit we are filming on a Sunday midday on a Sunday so some of them will be closed albe it but entire streets it feels a bit dystopian at times it really does well we like to explain to the viewers about the ancient wall so um back in the day um they used to build walls to to to stop things from getting in so uh yeah they they they beat that they beit that wall and uh it’s still there cuz it it they protected it mate you know what we’ve done by accident what we’ve accidentally made Southampton look like a really nice place to live who said it was accidental maybe I’m just a lied to you on the way here may maybe we just love Southampton me look at this super modern building it goes on for Miles you’ve got the West Key Mall down there which is absolutely lovely we’ll show you inside in a minute you’ve got a bunch of random restaurants that you can go to and you got balami over there balam mate mate it’s a nice place so far I like it so far so far what are you telling what aren’t we telling them you hiding everything what do you reckon about the mall mate it’s actually quite a nice mall to be fair I can’t even say anything like that bad about it it’s it’s pretty pretty nice once again we’ve just made Southampton look really nice to be honest but In fairness I knew that before we came here like past experience this is actually like yeah that’s what that’s what he said he said from living here for five years the one good place in Southampton is the mall it’s got a really it’s a massive Mall as well you’ve got so many nice shops you’ve got a few restaurants upstairs as well there’s quite a lot to do here really and it goes on even further there’s a circle bit and there’s a line bit after Lally I can’t even see the end of it that’s a good description a circle bit and a line bit that’s uh yeah good description this is 10 out of 10 um content right here so now we’re in bargate which is the main sort of High Street of Southampton to be honest it contrasts quite differently to the mall area the super modern area and the super old oldie baly area is this the bad Mall you were talking about is this the um what there’s a good one and a bad one isn’t there it’s just the UK you know average UK High Street activity you know what I mean this is what I thought I knew Southampton was mixed but I was sort of thinking it can’t all be nice surely not it’s too good to be true it is a lovely Place overall but this is what they talk about when they say the decline of the British High Street so yeah this is I mean you got I mean it looks like they’re sort of opening something perhaps but nonetheless this is more your standard sort of shopping ball that reflects more of the entire country in comparison definitely legitimate shop that we definitely real and prosperous definitely not money laundering no no God God how could you insinuate such a thing yeah I mean there’s so many like abandoned shops and stuff like that here it changes completely I’m not going to walk down the street cuz right now we’re going to try and find allegedly according to this guy the most dangerous Park in all of Southampton but down there as far as the I can see half of it shut down every other shop is it that park there mate or I don’t know I just got I just remember it being wor worst tour guide ever worst tour guide ever well here we are guys we’re in allegedly the worst Park in all of Southampton it’s quite busy to be honest isn’t it like up ahead there’s I mean I don’t think there’s a stat on that being dangerous I I just remember it being a really not very nice place and it’s seeming to prove me right yeah I mean there’s a lot of litter like well everywhere to be honest you can’t it doesn’t really show up but it’s a wide angle lens but there’s a lot of litter here and there and a lot of bird feathers do you got an explanation for that local guys uh yeah I do actually um that guy over there oh yeah seagull that’s why it’s the most I get it now it’s the bloody seagull no that wasn’t insinuating anything other than just you know it’s RI bird attacks you know what I mean so we’re on our way to the most dangerous statistically speaking Park in all of Southampton let’s read some of the reviews and see just how bad it is this time we actually researched it um this is coming from Hampshire pc. goov uh the unused and deric buildings in the park obstruct clear lines of sight and natural surveillance of the area uh followed by Trip Advisor one that says great place to be mugged stagged or attacked stagged stabbed I tell you what guys I don’t want to be stagged in this part I’ve been here before you’ve been here before can you I survived this place before I’m going back for round two let’s have it come on did you get stacked stagged yeah Stag Night we’re in hoglands park now there’s a little skate part of graffiti on here but it to be fair it doesn’t feel that bad feels quite nice and open but I’ll tell you what it’s absolutely dead so maybe at night is super dangerous and a lot of the locals know how bad it is and we are just unaware I don’t know expert guide I want to recall that that building in front of us something there was something about people in that building but I can’t remember what I just remember something about that building and activities relating to the building but I I don’t recall what I just recall that building here we’ve got a massive abandoned store apparently it’s been shut for four five six maybe even more years it’s one of the old deim look at that you can even tell it’s been closed down for so long but some of the can even sort of see inside really what it’s what it’s like in there now but literally all of the paper on the outside it’s just all sort of falling off how many years would you say it’s being closed down for as long as I can remember any time I’ve been here this building’s [Music] been good to remove just in case if it gets vandalized which it looks like it actually might have all the on there and whatnot TR keep and it just goes on for ages and it hasn’t been filled there just hasn’t been the investment there this point seeing the gentrification of property commercial is just not profitable enough anymore and that’s why the High Street looks like this demolition demolition when when when in how many years someone fact check me on that when the only thing that’s in progress is graffiti and people trying to break into the place it’s like people vote labor and conservative thinking like it’s actually going to make a difference it’s just it’s not even laughable you used to be laughable it’s actually just depressing at this point it’s it’s crazy I don’t think either side are actually considering anything to do with Deon and Southampton I don’t think they wake up oh you know we need to do something about deams in Southampton oh no you get my you get my point worst tour guide ever massive massive estate here of all these old apartments and the Mad thing about Southampton is how much does it cost for a one bed here I’ll put up in the text how much it actually costs for a one bed apartment a house etc etc but I can guarantee these people have a lot more money than I do let’s put it that way okay so now guys we’re going to go to what I’ve heard is an old shipwreck just on the coast here literally about 10 20 minutes away from the town city of Southampton let’s go for a little drive there and see what we can find apparently you can actually go inside it and see what it was like to go on a board an Old Ship so let’s have a little look and see what we can find all right we think it’s this way we’re trying to find an abandoned shipwreck it’s somewhere all the way over there it’s the most undirect path I’ve ever seen let’s see if we can find it guys we are properly in the middle of nowhere right now apparently according to Google Maps we walk past this old ancient wall and we go there to the shipw wre ruins the links we’re going to to make this video for you guys is actually insane like I’m wearing Adidas trainers you got white shoes I got Adidas trainers as and Adidas I’m I’m prepped out I got walking product if there’s not a shipwreck at the end of this wood I’m actually going to well I don’t know how well you can see but all of this is totally CED off and there’s a bunch of cows in that field blocking our way and where there’s cows there’s a farmer we’re not too sure if he would be happy of us walking through or not so we’re going to pass on the Shipwreck today so annoying but we’ll C we’re going to come back for a second time so stay tuned for that we’re going to get to the bottom of this we’re going to find a way to get in is abandoned shipwreck and on that disappointment I’ll see you guys in the next episode see you later

That local guide seems like a lovely gentleman.
Shoulsve done the estates youre in the city centre mush. Southampton statistically is the most dangerous city south of Brum (other than London) every year
Yh you stayed in the cite centre, doesn't show it in a true light at all
I live in ocean village
He's not exactly Simon Sharma, your mate 🤓
Nothing wrong with are Southampton born and breed here 😂
I dont really agree with most of what has been said. You went through the mildest part of town. 😂🤣
10am-12pm st marys, watch all the junkies kicking off trying to get their fix. Funny as F when they start fighting over who owes who a pipe and who did what to who.
Much better places in Southampton, the centre isn’t a nice place at all,
Check out netley abbey, or warsash, or Botley
Shirley warren or saint marys is dangerous areas in Southampton
So weird seeing Southampton from a total stranger's perspective. You missed a lot of good spots though, soz!
45 years of Tory (Tory policies under dfifferent names – ask yourself – which party renationalised the stolen and sold off public assets and prioperty? None) rule have changed what used to be a pretty nice city into – as these lads say – somethign dystopian – samer as everywhere else in England.
Having lived there for decades – it's horrific to see what's become of it since the '80's.
A lot of the footage here is taken inaround the depressing area around the DSS Building (brown – even tinted brown windows). Yeah, it's even more grim than it used to be.
By the way – Soton's not a 'seaside resort' it's a PORT.
You DO know that 'clear lines of sight' are the things you have in dangerous places, right? The more foliage, the safer a place is… this is why the most violence happens in CITIES (who thinks that only foliage prevents 'clear lines of sight' and buildings and cars don'|?). Three decades ago (the '90's, those partks were filled with foliage, beautiful and a great place for a relaxing afternoon… NOw they're bare of foliage, litter-filled, ugly and being described as 'dangerous'.
"NIce and open" is a description of a desert – NOT a park.
"That building" was a cricket pavillion "things that happened in that buuildingh" was people changing for cricket and having tea.
"Poeple vote Labour and Conservative like it's going to make a difference" – sorry, but no-one's been able to vote Labopur since 1996, when Labour became 'New Labour' (who had the same policies as the Tories) or in tyhat brief few years (2015-19)) when Labour tok back their party and there was a chabnce to change things… and the public were told not to vote for Labopur because "It would destroy the country". If you want things to improve, we have to vote for something dfifferent from the Selfservatives or – their new replacements – the private asset-stripping company 'Reform' (funded by the same offshore finance as the Selfservatives).
God, this is depressing… Debbenhams (once -0 'Edwin HJones' ) was a Wionderland in the '60's and '70's, when (as you guys say) we stuill had an exconomy based on People rather than The Stock Market.
The sea used to come up to the edge of the city walls (where Showcase cinema is) There are big iron rings to tie your ship to in the wall. But there was land reclaimation, so the sea is further away now.
I used to walk through Hoglands park every day, even dead at night, never saw a thing. Things certainly happen there but they do in every city. Better the occasional problem than some police state.
I don't really get this channel. My dad grew up in the 70s, getting into fights and dodging crime was part and parcel of life back then. Crime figures have been steadily decreasing since the 90s but the truth about immigration people won't talk about is that for the most part it doesn't make a difference to crime. The main issue is organised crime, which can sometimes be an issue that accompanies immigration, but politicians and the police don't like putting too many resources into combatting that, they focus on misdemeanors and petty crime instead, so the problem is not addressed. Everything from the Muslim grooming gangs to drug distribution is all part of organised crime, the problem is they have the resources to buy off politicians and law enforcement forces, and they do. People want to believe that the elites are incorruptible but it's not true, and I'm sorry I know you probably think Reform UK are different but you're kidding yourselves, they are cut from the same cloth, mostly made up of ex tories who believe the tories weren't 'corrupt' enough. But making immigration illegal won't solve this issue, there is a whole myriad of solutions that need addressing, but combating corruption at every level and reinvesting in our society to limit the causes of crime is paramount. The prison system we have is a circular problem, it's punitive but not aimed at reintergrating criminals back into society. So the problems persist, criminals get out and go back into the system that put them in prison in the first place, they don't have a choice. Organised crime also thrives in prison. The fact is the reason issues are not changing is because instead of changing the system for the better, instead we just say 'we haven't tried the system hard enough'. Every examination of a militarised police force demonstrates that it doesn't solve the problems, it exacerbates them. Ruling by fear and tyranny will not solve our problems, eliminating corruption at the top will.
I was born in Southampton I moved away wen I was 2 and spent a week there wen I was 16 I’m 34 now
Pompey is better
I come from Southampton still live in Southampton I'd say two worse parts Thornhill and Millbrook. At times can be more like warzones . Buts as a whole it's not a bad place. I've been to far worse places around the UK
Who else loves adventure❤?
Open spaces like 4:57 and the view from Itchen bridge.. It's nice to explore by yourself if you're an introvert.
Then there's the forest area at the end of the bridge I didn't explore with 63% volume in my system – where could it lead?
I was sure it lead to another populated area but chose to turn back.
The bus is cheap too compared to London, that's good. I also saw large freight containers across a motorway
during my adventure never seen that before.
