Has anyone pedaled from San Cristobal de las Casas to Tapachulas directly instead of going back around through Arriagas and the coast and did you feel safe?

Hi! I’ve received a couple of words of cation from locals from here in Tuxtla who have expressed concern for me when I shared I planned on going directly down to Tapachulas instead of going back to Arriagas and through the coast. The difference is 100 kilometers basically (331 vs 429 km respectively according to Google Maps). Has anyone traveled through either road before ?
