  1. Softshell pants are my go-to for the winters we get. They can be cross country ski pants or hiking/mountaineering style. I just throw them over whatever casual pants I want to wear that day. It’s usually enough to keep me warm and the regular pants stay dry and clean. The hardshell ones come out when it’s super sloppy conditions.

I grabbed a 30 dollar pair of rain overpants from Amazon that are excellent. I find that rainproof windbreaker material is more than enough to keep the legs warm with work pants underneath. I also have a pair of showers pass rain pants that are higher quality, but don’t justify the substantially increased price imo.

Edit – look for a pair with Velcro at the ankle, lots of them have this.

  3. I think I have a pair of Endura rain pants for gross days, otherwise Costco commuter pants plus long johns if it’s cold.

I wear Frogg Toggs. They are roomy, but windproof, waterproof, and best of all breathable.

  5. As others have said a pair of shorts or tights is often best if you are gonna get sweaty or wet.

But if you need a cover I have used cheap Decathlon over trousers – I think I have their sailing / tribord range. About £15 and perfect for showers and protecting your main trousers from road grime.
