Two questions: what is this grey thing called? And how on Earth did I manage to mess up the thread on the inside?

I think it’s called a barrel adjuster. It’s not the end of the world if the threads are stripped if theres a second closer to the brake. Worst case scenario you just have to tighten the cable in the future.
