What's up my fellow dorks… I'm planning on replacing the Dura-Ace 7700 group on my 63cm bob jackson, and I aim to keep it completely vintage and at least relatively accurate…
That being said, i'm faced with 4 choices of which i'm having severe decision paralysis about… all of them have their benefits, none are perfect but here are my self imposed options:
SUNTOUR
1- regress back to a friction system with first generation cyclone
SHIMANO
2- cost effective with shimano 600 tricolore complete groupset (those freewheels are awesome )
and now for less feasible, yet much cooler options
MAVIC
3- as complete as a Mavic groupset i can put together, ideally with the 840 or 851 rear derailleur. Or the all silver 801, though I do want to keep the slant parallelogram which the 801 or 851 do NOT have.
SACHS(ARIS)
4- a full sachs New Success ARIS groupset. their last hurrah before SRAM, and significant contribution to the indexing revolution. considered as similar to Mavic parts at the time.
I've been working at bike shops for a few years now, most notably Via Bicycle on broad street, the oldest running shop in philadelphia, as well as the only shop in philly where theres someone knows how to repack an old sturmey archer 3 speed hub. (this is me telling you, don't go anywhere else for that here — all the other shops are watching youtube tutorials) So i have some resources! I guess I'm here to ask for your pure opinion, why you would prefer one over the other, cost effectiveness, etc…. Give me a piece of your mind! I'm a ripe 26 years of age and while I've taught myself a lot about this stuff, I wasn't alive for any of it. hell, I grieve suntour and I was negative 8 years old when they stopped manufacturing!
