Hey everyone, I’m looking for some advice.

About four months ago I bought an old hardtail for $400 and started riding off-road trails around the DFW area. I ended up completely falling in love with MTB. After a while I realized the hardtail wasn’t cutting it for the type of riding I want to do, so I sold it and now I’m hoping to move up to a full-suspension bike.

My budget is pretty limited — roughly $1000 to $1500 — and I’m definitely shopping second-hand. I’m looking for something that can handle the local trails well, climbs decently, and still lets me have fun on descents.

I found a 2018 Specialized Stumpjumper Comp Alloy 29 that looks to be in good condition, and the seller is asking $1300.

For those familiar with this model or with the used market in general:
Is $1300 a fair price? Anything specific I should check or be aware of with this generation of Stumpjumper?

Any other bikes I should look at in that price range?

Thanks in advance!

Depends on your area a little, but I’d say that is high. Even being in good condition, it is still almost 8 years old and 2 generations of Stumpjumper old. I wouldn’t pay any more than $1000. Less if it suspension is due for service.

The geometry is getting dated but it’s still solid. I’d try to look for 2021+ models. Maybe look at YT Jeffsy, could find some solid deals there. Possibly Cannondale Habit.

  2. See if you can negotiate the price down to 800-1000. Otherwise I would pass on this one and go for something more modern in terms of geometry and components.

  3. Got the same 2019 SJ. Great bike! But asking price is quite steep. Go for 900 but not more than 1k.
