I was wondering if anyone had any tips to open or cut a krytonite chain lock. I recently broke up with my gf. I had a trek mountain bike I use to see family near by. We broke up back in September and I haven’t been in the mood to do much.

Last Sunday I decided to take my bike for a ride when I discovered she had not only cut my brakes and put super glue in my lock.

I allowed her to come back and retrieve some items a few months ago. I was home and I didn’t notice anything.

I got the mongoose bike from a friend for 250$. I was hoping to keep it for a few more years. Should I trash the whole bike and get a new one. Or does anyone have any ideas to remove the chain. The chain is locked around the center bar where the seat sits.

Any help is appreciated

  1. The lock can be cut with an angle grinder.

Possibly you could try acetone to dissolve the super glue, but it will probably not be usable afterwards. Fingernail polish remover often has acetone.

  2. Leave it as a warning to future boyfriends. Those locks are solid. She will also be reminded of you.

Isopropyl alcohol dissolves super glue. Your exes nail polish remover (acetone) will dissolve it as well. Bolt cutter worth a shot, die grinder and carbide disc ….

  4. The inside of the lock already has a lot of light oil and metal dust so super glue shouldn’t be that big a deal. With penetrating oil and acetone in the keyhole, 20 minutes with a heat gun and a pair of pliers on the key, you should be able to get the lock open. With a little patience and elbow grease the lock should still be usable.

bike’s not trash it’s a simple job to replace the brake cables. follow others’ advice here on getting the lock off and go take the bike to a shop, or buy some cables and do it yourself

  6. if you are in the u.s . buy 70% isopropyl alcohol and a syringe. both should be about 1 USD at a supermarket.

use the syringe to apply isopropyl alcohol, directly on the key hole.

if you can keep the keyhole facing up, do so. you want the alcohol to maintain contact with the glue as long as possible.

wait 20-30 minutes. try to use your key.

if glue still remains, apply more alcohol.

glue will eventually dissolve and you can reuse your lock.
