Struggling to fall asleep after hard night rides. Any suggestions for winding down and getting to sleep better? Breathing and yoga help some but not sure if I’m missing something

  1. Exercise late at night is poor sleep hygiene unfortunately and will negatively impact your sleep quality.

  2. Riding in the dark is way better in the morning than at night.

Not surprising though, i wouldnt be able to sleep for at least 2 or 3 hours after hard exercise.

Instead of riding at night try the early morning. That’s what I do mostly because of kids but I find im always ready for bed before 10 if I ride at 6am

  4. You might not be hydrating enough post night ride. I had the same thing for years and i realized that after i rode during the day, it took me all day/evening to rehydrate. So now I focus on getting a ton of hydration in, including sports drink, during and after night rides. Which is hard to do unintentionally because night rides are so much cooler, so I had to do it with purpose.

A lack of hydration can raise your internal body temperature ( or rather, stop it from cooling properly post exercise) which impacts sleep

  5. Everybody is suggesting riding in the morning, but the group ride is going to happen, whether or not you were there. Try waiting to eat dinner until after, take a nice shower and hop in bed after. I do this every Wednesday and sleep like a baby. I think the full belly helps. Sleep on your left side if reflux is a concern.

use to get this after playing hockey when i was younger. Used to play all the time with 9pm game starts.

    Try magnesium supplements

do you drink coffee during the day? Cut that out or do decaf/tea

    Hydrate

Make the room as cold as possible

  7. Part of the reason it is so hard to go to sleep is because the exercise increases your internal body temperature. Drinking plenty of water, taking a shower, and making sure your room temperature is cold enough may help.
