Okay so I’ve got an 80s-ish Motobecane that I’m doing some restoration on. I had a six speed wheel/cassette and 6 speed chain from another vintage bike (frame damaged in a crash, but I salvaged the parts). So I take off the old wheel, chain, derailer, and thoroughly clean everything.

Then, I put in the new chain and new wheel with 6-speed cassette.

But something about the rear derailer doesn’t seem right — tension is too loose (pic 1). If I turn the Allen key clockwise (pic 2), it looks more like how I’d imagine this should sit. I’ve unscrewed that portion where the Allen key is, so I see the single spring inside, but I can’t seem to figure out how to adjust it so it actually springs the chain into tension. The third pic shows the little “post” on the derailer, about as far clockwise as it’ll go. In other words, it won’t over twist clockwise to hit the other part of the derailer (which… I think it should, based on my examination of my other vintage bikes).

How do I fix this?

Thank you!

Shorten the chain. Put it around the biggest cogs on the front and back and then find the link that is almost tight then add four links, remove the excess links and you should be good.
