I just bought this 2nd hand Specialized Cross trail from 2018.

When I bought it the guy said the breaks might need new brake pads as they make a squeaky noise and don't break the bike 100% good. So I just changed the break pads (bought new ones, see the blue ones in the photo in the comments ) and install them.

Apart from the fact that now to break I need to go "deeper" with the break handle in order to break, they don't feel as tight as they were. But also, the squeaky noise didn't go away. The noise actually got worse and the breaks are even worse than before so clearly, the break pads weren't the problem.

Can anyone help me with this? I would like to fix it without going to a bike shop and spend hounded dollars to fix it.

Thanks!

Disk breaks weird noise issue

  1. Are You using metallic brake pads on a disc that is meant for organic pads?
Your disk might be in a bad shape too, which causes vibration when you brake(vibrations create noises)

I recommend you don’t put yourself in danger and take this bike to a pro to fix this.

  2. Make sure the disk is clean if it isnt already. Also you probably need to bed in your brakes. Get it up to speed and slowly apply brakes until you’re about to stop, then get back up to speed. Repeat a few times.

  3. if ur smart mechanically u can do a full decontamination using a little bit of degreeser mixed with water and a brand new brush to clean the disks and if you haven’t installed the new pads yet wait till after u clean the rotor or they will contaminate your new pads if you have installed the new pads you can sand them down until there no longer shiny if this doesn’t work you may need to buy new rotors as it could’ve been sitting contaminated for so long that it’s fully embedded in the rotor

Some new brake pads can squeak a bit at first, depending on their quality. Good-quality pads usually don’t make much noise. Squeaking often goes away after you ride with them for a while and let them bed in.

  5. Also, when using brand new brake pads, you should activate them by riding at 25km/h and make a full stop for about 10 to 15 times, this will make the stuff on the pads get into the right texture for optimal braking

clean the rotors with IPA first, then check to make sure that all bolts are tight. This could be a harmonics issue caused by misalignment or some sort of vibration that’s amplified through the frame. If all looks good, find the biggest hill you can, get going as fast as you can, then do SRAM’s bed in procedure:

    • Accelerate the bike to a moderate speed, then firmly apply the brakes until you are at walking speed. Repeat approximately twenty times.

    • Accelerate the bike to a faster speed, then very firmly apply the brakes until you are at walking speed. Repeat approximately ten times.

This seems excessive, but it really gets some heat in the pads and helps to speed the process. Check alignment after the process.

  7. After german tour de France commentators the brake must make these noise to know that they work.

No joking they ( bike experts ) have that said on tour de France 2025 in german tv🤣
