I grew up in the Midwest, doing long mountain bike or gravel rides in the snow. Now I live on the west coast of the PNW, and we are lucky to get snow every few years, but from the moment the accumulation begins, I am already planning my snow ride.

In San Diego yes, it’s quite possible and we do.

No. As soon as the first snow comes I am done for the year. You can say I am a bit of a snow flake…..

Don’t have a car so don’t have a choice to not ride all year round

Definitely get that tattoo on the knuckles, you won’t regret that ever. It won’t look stupid at all and everyone will like you.

1000%. Riding a quiet trail on packed snow is one of my favorite pastimes

Of course, how would you move from place to place without a bike?
Even as a kid, when there was too much snow to pedal I just carried my bike to school.

I started riding again this year after a decade of not riding. I kept telling myself during the summer that I was gonna ride through the winter. Or at least, the warmer parts of my Minnesota winter. 🤣
But then October hit, and I found that once it drops into the lower 50’s in American temps, it sucked most of the fun out of riding for me. And then I found out some studded winter tires were gonna cost me ~$200 to get installed, I said hell no. In the spring I plan to buy a more road oriented bike, and maybe sell my Trek FX3.
edit: also forgot to mention the cost of cycling specific winter gear. Like wool stuff. I’m trying to save for a new bike! 🤣

I prefer winter biking, whether that’s in rain or -20C and snow.

Year round, but weather permitting. I need to see the Sun shining at least a bit to go for a ride. Sun and snow would be ideal, but almost never happens nowadays.

Yup. Rode yesterday in the snow. It was 30°F at 8am when I started and 35°F when I finished at 930am. You gotta get there early to ride while the snow is sticky and before it melts and everything turns into slush and mud.
The (short) downhill sections get pretty scary as well, it’s like skiing on a bike when my back wheel loses traction.

First year doing it year round since leaving Northern California, where I used to do year round comfortably, now I have to deal with winter, should be fun…

Nope, I try to only ride all day trips in fair weather.
Next year I’m going to try and get into multi day trips.

Yup! I ride a bit less in the winter due to weather but I still commute through the winter. In some ways I almost prefer it over summer weather.
I live at over 4000 feet and love how the crowd thins in my local canyon once there is snow on the sides of the road. I have a couple of bike bags and carry whatever layers I need for the descent in them. On the coldest days I have lobster mitts with hand warmers inside them packed in my bag for the descent.

Don’t tattoo that on your knuckles
But, yes, year round

rain or shine
I’m giving it a go!
Rode today, ambient temp was -18C but apparently closer to -25C with the wind. On a 700c commuter bike.
Really mild Canadian winter so far, almost no snow. That’ll be what puts me back in the car I think.
Studded tires make the difference though for sure. Shifts the challenge from not falling on my ass, to not freezing to death.

Alone, at night, on the ice.

We don’t get snow in Copenhagen, so yes. Same in London before that.
I’ve made it my mission to get out once a week year round. No excuses with a fat bike 🤘
