i decided to clean up my track wheels and removed the old tubeless tape that was falling apart and installed normal 18mm rim strips since the internal width of these irwin carbon tech 58s is 18mm, but the bead wouldn’t seat because the strip was getting in the way and i blew out a brand new tpu tube. my lbs said tubeless tape would be the best for it since they are tlr wheels and the strip gets in the way, but they didn’t have 18mm tape and i’m not finding anything other than 17mm and 19mm apart from some 18mm orange seal stuff that’s out of stock everywhere. would 17mm work fine if i go over 1 side and then the other with 2 passes?

full tubeless isn’t an option since i run high pressures at the track and i don’t think it would even be allowed, tubeless tape just has more clearance than a rim strip

If the internal width is 18mm I would go with 19mm tape since a little bit of the extra width will go to conforming along the surface of the rim bed

  2. You typically want tape that matches the outer width of the rim because the “dip” or “well” in the middle of the rim will consume some of the width. If there are no spoke holes, you don’t need tape. TPU tubes are not yet as reliable as butyl and the installation of TPU tubes requires special care. You might had a bad tube or you fucked up the install.

19mm tubeless tape pulled tight will work but it takes an extremely firm pull.

17mm will be easier as you don’t need to worry about tape riding up against the inner sidewall, and since you are still installing a tube, a narrower strip is going to be ideal
