A while back I got on my bike and, after shifting down, tried to shift up. Suddenly the derailer gear assembly snapped into the back wheel, kind of like an open stapler refusing to close. I do not know a lot about bikes but it is pretty clear to me that a part of screw is missing in the tensioner/derailer assembly. I just have never seen that part of the bike open like it does in the pictures. Please help me fix my bike! I really love it and want to keep it happy.

The part that opened up like a stapler is the derailleur gaurd. I don’t see anything missing. Might just need adjustment. That era Varsity had friction shifting so you just adjust the stop so your chain dosen’t go into your rim or frame.
