Hi. I had an incident while mountain biking last weekend that left me with a snapped off rear derailleur. Before ordering a new derailleur, I want to be certain that the hanger is in good enough condition where I can just replace the derailleur.
I've attached three photos of the hanger along with some other photos of the damage to provide more context.
Besides replacing the derailleur (and possibly the hanger), what else should I make sure to check or replace before going out to ride again?
- The wheel still rotates straight and I don't see any spoke damage or feel any difference in tension
- The chain seems okay, but I'll probably replace it out of caution
- There is also a loose fitting or something on the part of the derailleur that screws into the hanger. Is this normal? Should this be part of the hanger? I don't see any damage on it.

Might aswell replace the hanger aswell bro, if a crash is so rough that the derailleur snaps off its better to be safe than sorry!
Rotate it as far counterclockwise as it will go.
Then use a 8mm allen wrench and just give the screw a good tug. Counterclockwise as the arrows indicate. It doesn’t seem to be bent.

Did u buy that mech from Temu?
Hanger might be bent it might not be – if u suspect its bent then replace it for like £12
Probably bent if ur mech has snapped off the bike..
Rotate counterclockwise and then re-torque. I’d also advise a new one
I always keep a spare hanger for each of my bikes that use one
Alright so I’m a frugal old fuck who won’t throw away shit until it’s confirmed broken. I would hit it with the alignment tool, mount up the rd and see if it still looks good. Regardless…you have a spare hanger in your tool kit right? I order a spare for all my bikes, then put it in a little baggy with the screws and put it under the seat. Derailleur harm is a common occurrence here.
If ur replacing the chain may as well replace a cheap hanger….
If in doubt swap it out!
