  1. Those old hubs are usually serviceable, if you want to get some new wheels make sure that the front wheel is an extra sturdy (cargo) one.

  2. I have a similar and put on a 26″ with 7 speed coaster hub and a BMX front wheel. You could put BMX bars and a stem converter if you really want to change it up. I use for daily stuff around town.

Old drum brakes sometimes have brake pads made from asbestos. Be careful if you decide to service the brake

There are two things: (a) the things I would do, and (b) the things I would tell someone else to do.

For me, I would put flat mountain bike bars on there with a slightly longer (threadless) stem. I would get a new fork (probably custom) that would let me use disk brakes. I would have the rear modified to take disk brakes. I would put a 1X on there with a SRAM wireless group set. New seat (brooks) and new wheels (36 spoke and good rims). New paint. SPDs.

For you, I would service the rear hub. The front hub I don’t have much use for. I would look into putting a BMX brake on the front. If it doesn’t fit then maybe find a better drum brake (that would be disappointing). The steel crank set looks usable. I might put an aluminum one on there is I could find something cheap and good looking. Brooks seat. Bear traps. Paint(maybe just touch up).
