I am trying to surprise my son with a graduation gift while Sigma Sports is having their Black Friday sale, and I am torn between these two models. Is there enough of a difference to warrant the price increase? Or would the Basso be ok? He's a pretty frequent rider so I want to make sure what I get will last and be something he can really enjoy, not have to constantly fix and eventually replace.

  1. Both will last long if taken care of well and regularly. But a lot of things in a bike will need to be changed, and more often as your son rides it a lot.

The Basso seems fine, but it looks like it has Campagnolo groupset, which is quite costly when it comes to spare parts or consumables.

Maybe ask him? He will definitely do a TON of looking into both of them, takes away the surprise but then you know he is getting something he will CHERISH and remember his great dad/mom for on every ride.

  3. Have him choose. Make the surprise that he’s getting a bike and let him decide which he likes better.

  4. Between these two personally I’d prefer the Basso; the components are probably comparable but the Basso has nicer wheels and 400-600 less is a big chunk of change

I also agree with the rest that you should maybe let him choose. Maybe get him a toy bike as a totem to suggest what you’re *actually* getting him?

If he’s a frequent rider, it’s a huge risk buying him a bike without knowing what he wants or what size he might prefer.

Ask him to chose. Ruins the surprise but nothing worse than the wrong bike.

Like, I’m assuming you are not that knowledgeable about bike’s because you’re comparing a Basso with Campagnolo manual gears and a Cannondale with Shimano Di2.

  6. Those are endurance bikes, maybe he´s more in the competitive side and prefers a race geometry… maybe wider rims, maybe more climber focused.. It´s a lot of money to go wrong…definitely ask him a bit more if not the bike, what´s his preferences and style.
