If you can't speak their language, just speak English lol. The moment you speak English, the local would immediately understand that you are foreigner and don't understand their language.
I lived in a spanish country and I felt to weird talking with an accent so I worked to get rid of it and did a really good job, but my knowledge of Spanish was still really bad, so every time I would tell people that I couldnt understand them they would always think I was lying and start laughing, they would legit keep saying stuff in spanish until I stared blankly in their face long enough that they believed me. I Literally started speaking spanish with a really bad accent to people would just know and I didnt have to do the whole song and dance everytime.
It works much better if you speak English we used to do that in Thailand all the time and since they couldn't speak English well they would let you go just to save face
