I changed the cable and the housing to my girlfriend's bike. The bike is still on a bike rack, and cable is loose (I'm doing some adjustmens). One problem I have is that the ferrule cap keeps on dropping off from the shifter. Is this normal or did I install it wrong way?

The numbered parts in the image

(1) The shifter: microSHIFT ADVENT Xpress Plus (SL-M8195-R)
(2) The barrel adjuster of the shifter
(3) The cable housing (Shimano OT-SP41)
(4) The ferrule cap which keeps on dropping. (Shimano SP-40)
(5) A gap between ferrule gap and shifter (=the problem)

The internals of this shifter are quite similar to what's seen on p.2 of this document: https://www.microshift.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Trail-Trigger-Shifter-Parts-VerSH003001.pdf

Without having the benefit of a wider view, I would guess that the cable housing is too short.

  2. My first guess would be that there’s friction in the system, and when shifting into a harder gear the rear derailleur spring isn’t able to take up the tension causing slack.

Disconnect the cable at the derailleur and hold it, then shift up and down. If the cable feels sluggish that’s likely your reason. Check the line for any pinch points (kickstands are a common one)

You need to tighten the inner cable some more so that there is pressure on both ends of the outer cable (and ferrule caps).

If you can’t shorten/tighten the inner cable enough to do this, then you’ve cut the outer too short.

Or, if the system is designed with outer cable only in some places, and exposed inner in others… Then you don’t have the outer sitting in the cable-stops properly…

  4. Having the cable under tension is that keeps the housing in compression (conversely, the compression in the housing is what provides cable tension). Pull the cable through the attachment point on the derailleur. Apply some preload, then fix the cable in place with the compression screw. You may need one or two extra hands to apply the preload while you pull the cable taut and reattach it.
