Did you know two European countries almost went to war because of a name.
I’m sure you are aware of the great Macedonian Empire and its even greater emperor Alexander the GOAT. Greece is very proud of this history. So when Yugoslavia collapsed and a new country called Macedonia was formed Greece claimed this country was trying to steal its history.
In 2008 Greece even stopped NATO from inviting Macedonia. Macedonia responded by erecting a massive statue of Alexander the Great in its capital.
however this issue was finally resolved when Macedonia changed its name in 2019.

  1. In the time of Alexander the Great (4th century BC):Macedonia was an independent kingdom, with its own dynasty, language, military structure, and culture. After the victory over Athens and Thebes (battle of Chaeronea, 338 BC), the Greek city-states were placed under Macedonian hegemony. The Macedonian king Philip II and later Alexander ruled over all of Hellas (southern Balkans) as conquerors, not as part of Greece.Even the Greek historians of that time did not consider the Macedonians to be "Greeks", but rather as neighbours who had defeated and ruled them.Historical revisionism after the 19th century After the establishment of the modern Greek state (1830), the new power began with the "Hellenization" of history. Everything that was ancient and glorious in the territory that today encompasses Greece was declared Greek, including Macedonia and Alexander.Historical revisionism after the 19th century After the establishment of the modern Greek state (1830), the new power began with the "Hellenization" of history. Everything that was ancient and glorious in the territory that today encompasses Greece was declared Greek, including Macedonia and Alexander.Greece occupied Aegean Macedonia after the Balkan Wars (1912–1913), and at that time, strong pressure and erasure of the Macedonian identity began.Over time, the thesis that "Macedonia has always been a Greek land" was included in propaganda and textbooks. But the truth is:πŸ”Ή In the ancient world, Macedonia was a power of its own.πŸ”Ή Athens and Sparta were defeated, not united with Macedonia.πŸ”Ή The Macedonian kings ruled over the Greeks, not as Greeks, but as masters.πŸ”Ή The ancient Greeks themselves (e.g. Demosthenes) referred to Philip as a "barbarian", not a Greek. Conclusion: The claim that Macedonia was a province of Greece is: Historically inaccurate Politically motivated Created to obscure the occupation of Macedonian territories and culture.

  2. Why is Greece trying to take over Macedonian history? 1. Historical defeat and humiliation When Alexander the Great defeated the Greek city-states (such as Athens and Thebes), he subjugated them and made them part of the Macedonian empire. The Greeks never forgot that someone they did not consider a "true Greek" became their master. At that time, the Greeks themselves clearly made the distinction: Macedonians β‰  Greeks. 2. The emergence of nationalism in the 19th century After the fall of the Ottoman Empire, Greece attempts to create an "ancient" national image based on a glorious past. Since Greece had no great heroes at that time, it begins to appropriate Alexander, Philip II, and Macedonian history. 3. Political and cultural engineering Greece changes the terminology: it promotes the term "Hellenistic period" instead of "Macedonian dominance" after Alexander's death. It is claimed that Macedonia was a Greek province, although in reality: It was an independent kingdom. It had its own language and culture. It conquered and ruled.with Greece, not the other way round. 4. Modern disputes (20th-21st century) After the Second World War and especially after the breakup of Yugoslavia, Greece: fears for the identity of the Macedonian people, insists that 'Macedonia' is Greek heritage, pressures the international community not to recognise the Macedonian language, people and history. 🧩 Conclusion: Yes β€” the Greek claims are an attempt at historical revisionism, based on early complexes, nationalist interests, and political strategy. History testifies: Macedonia was its own, not someone else's.

  3. If Alexander and Macedonain empire weren't famous, thay will do anything to prove that Macedonian and Greece are different. Even Demosthenes several time have mention about non-Helenic origin of the Macedonains ( he called Macedonians as barbarians) but Greece's are silent about that.

  4. Macedonians are not Greek, Macedonian is a different ethnicity that claims some things from ancient Macedonia and our Slavic forefathers. Alexander the Great was Macedonian, not Greek. Some say he spoke Greek but his first language was Macedonian, he spoke many other languages such as Persian and only moved to the Greek language after it was seen as β€œadvantageous” the city of Macedonia was located in the area of north Macedonia, the Macedonians invaded Greece, they claimed it, the Slavic forefathers reshaped the ethnicity, the Greeks tried to claim Macedonian heritage, Yugoslavia formed with Macedonian culture, Serbian culture, and Croatian culture, Macedonia left Yugoslavia and reclaimed their name (in Yugoslavia that region was known as Macedonia), the Greeks got mad, they began an invasion of Macedonia, claimed a small bit of territory, ethnically cleansed that territory, claimed it as their own, refused to let Macedonia join NATO until they changed their name, that is the correct order. Moral of the story: Don’t trust the Greeks

  5. The interesting part is that before the Macedonian empire, Macedonia was a small state OUTSIDE OF GREECE, and then Alexander beat the living shit out of the Greeks armies and now they are saying that Alexander is greek. That is just false.
