Hi all,

Ex racer here, finally getting back to cycling after an extended illness cut short my time trial and road racing.

I am just building up my first hub geared bike. In days gone by, I would use standard carbon SRAM chainsets on my fixed gear time trial builds, but want to know what is the current consensus on best setup. The standard cranks are square taper and I dont like or trust them.

I am restoring/rebuilding around a genesis day one frame and Shimano nexus hub. The rear wheel is a total boat anchor, so I will likely change bike in a year or two when I have my fitness back. For now, I am rebuilding on an 11 speed nexus, as this one is in a bad way.

  1. Square taper is rock solid. If you find a good 110/74 BCD square taper crank, you can use a single narrow wide ring with this hub and reconfigure later if you decide to switch back to cassette/derailleur combination.

Sram have powerspline cranks and BBs too and my city bike with a nexus hub came with them.
Though tbh square taper more ubiquitous nowadays so I’d probably rather have had that.

No upper limit in budget: EEwings with Cane creaks top BB. You can move the cranks to your newer bike.

Budget: Anything strong enough for your needs.

I also dislike square taper and I prefer a very long (180mm) crank, so I use Shimano XT triple cranksets with my Alfine and Rohloff hubs. It gives you a couple of options for chain ring position and the 104 BCD allows for a pretty healthy range of ring sizes.
