Saviours, any clue why this cable head won’t release from the shifter? I feel like I’ve tried everything…
Including:
- confirming correct gear for release
- attempting to pry cable
- using some penetrating lube
- swearing at it
Neither of these shifter cables will budge 🤦♂️.
It’s from an old (late 90s) mtb. The Shifter is a Shimano sl rs31. Doesn’t seem overly corroded… have thought about using a heat gun assuming it’s stuck in there.
Help! (Please)

You can push it out with a small pick. Buy you should also replace those twist shifters too
Penetrating lube.
Then twist the cable in the direction of the cable twist. Use pliers for grip. Eventually this will break the stiction between cable and housing. After several twists the cable will be quite stiff, push in the direction of the housing

This can happen. You are on the right track with trying to push it out. Grab the cable (not the head) about 1mm from where it starts to come out with a pair of pliers and push it through. The pic here is the wrong shifter but you get the idea. You want to grab just enough cable that it does not flex or bend and push it straight back.
Guys, I did it. I sat on the floor to write this post which might have been enough time for the lube to set in. Thank you!
I always get those out with a dental pick, you can pry from the front or push from the back
If you’re discarding the twist shifter (which I absolutely would), then you can be carefully destructive in encouraging that the twist shifter release it.
