The challenge of bikepacking from Santander, Spain to home in the UK originated over 10 years previously. Only that attempt failed halfway through. Failure was due to personal injury caused through poor planning, poor navigation and complete disregard for training. The challenge grew in stature over the years as Peter H and myself (Peter F) set about the task of addressing our previous failures in order to complete ‘unfinished business’ of this challenge. Particularly, as the biological clock is ticking and we’re more that 10 years older that the first attempt. Is 700 miles of unsupported bikepacking at the age of 75 years old too much?? most people think so.
Consequently, Peter H has insisted we get on and at least attempt the ride. So join us through the first part. We take the ferry from Portsmouth, UK to Santander, Spain to tackle the hills of the coastal region of the Spanish Basque Country to the boarder with France. The ride is tough but the rewards of beautiful scenic views, the warmth of Basque folk and interaction with the pilgrims’ en route to Santiago de Compostela, make this leg of the challenge so worth while.
