Im currently modifying my "hybrid" bike for more casual riding, I dont use it for mountain biking as often as I do for road use so im supplementing my High grade professional rig for a dinky handlebar set I found on one of those ancient bikes. Everything on the handlebars was compatible except for the center mounting point. I tried stuffing wood into the gap but it was too brittle and shook out, My next Idea is to use PVC pipe around the mounting point so that its flush unlike the wood but I would love to hear the outside communities perspective.

You’ll either need a new stem with the correct sized clamp, or you can get a “handlebar shim” for not a lot of money, which is what you’re trying to build with the PVC and wood. There kinda is no alternative to properly doing it, since it’s your teeth on the line when it fails.
A correct size stem would be cheaper than dental bills
