I picked up this and it’s twin step through version a few weeks ago. It’s was just looking for a descent used bike instead of $800 for a Trek. I got em both for $100. I have already changed the seat and the bars, I might change the bars again to give me a slightly more upright sitting posture but I think that’s it.
If I were to go crazy I would change up to a 1 x 11 and upgrade the crank.
I have 2 questions:
-
What was the Crossroads Cruz made for and what makes it different? It seems like a great bike for my novice needs.
-
What tires should I run I have the choice of going with Kendra Kouriers which came on the bike OR Continental Ride Tour 25 Extra on the step through frame?
Thanks!!

They’re fairly standard hybrid bikes, dead on targeted at novice riders. Quite popular when new, too. Perfect for you, it sounds like!
As for the tires, I’d use whichever are the least aged / cracked / newest.
There isn’t really any difference between the models with/without the Cruz label. I believe it was just the handlebars and stem pitting you in a more upright position. The frame was still the same.
I’d compare it to the most basic Sirrus available. Great bike, not the lightest, not the best components, it will make a great commuter
lovely frame in very good nic. you could polish the paint. that would make it look like new. as for the tires. if the kedas are still ok (I.e. not cracked) you can ride them and change later. the conti ones have a bit of puncture resistance if i remember correctly.
1x drive train would really modernise it
Cool, simple, and solid bike for everyday uses. I built one up for my teenage daughter as a 1×7 with a friction/ratchet shifter and cruiser bars. I wouldn’t go 1×11 though. Perhaps 1×9 but if gear range is what you want to prioritize then 3×7 with upgraded shifters and mechs will work great!

700c hybrids like the Crossroads get slept on. They’d make a decent conversion to semi-modern gravel bike.
Good deal. Great value. Why mess it up changing to a 1×11? Modify the bike to get a good fit, but major drive train changes just start eating away at the good deal – unless you can get the parts cheap from a co-op or the like.
I think the best bang for the buck change you could make would be to change the 7 speed freewheel for a 9 speed freehub and cassette. But only do that if you can get the wheel and cassette used, in good condition and at a low price. You will need a new shifter if you do. If your shifter is integrated with the brake lever, that’s another complication. As I said, probably better to just use the drive train as it is.
It would be a good commuter. It is reasonably sturdy. And pretty standard so there’s plenty of replacement parts/ upgrade options available. Going 1x would be a good idea, less components is less hassle. Don’t go crazy on getting all new parts head on. If you got a bike co-op or community bike hub near you, you can volunteer there and learn how to maintain and repair a bike first. Then ride more to find out what’s your preference, like do you want more gear range or smaller gear steps, etc. Btw I have the non-Cruz version and swap out everything but the seatpost.

Nice find! Here’s mine, and I love it!
It’s this new thing we invented in the early 90s, a “hybrid”. Not a mountain bike but also not a road bike. These were actually good things to convert into touring bikes.(another category of bikes that marketing departments reinvented and no longer exists)
