Quite the beginner here, trying to take the wobbly/wonky bottom bracket out of this 90’s diamondback touring bike and replace it, but I can’t find any YouTube videos or info that matches the bottom bracket on this bike. It’s square taper, but has screws sticking out. If yall would be kind enough to tell me what tools I need to take this off, and even if you have a suggestion for a new bottom bracket that will fit nicely, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

  2. Drive side:
    – Park tool HCW-4 (or a large enough adjustable wrench)
    Non-drive side:
    – Lock ring tool (hook wrench) (or a flat head screwdriver and a hammer to knock it loose)
    – Park tool HCW-11 (or needle/flat nose pliers)

If you get the drive side off first, you can remove the axle and bearings. That way you can maybe use flat nose pliers to turn/remove the cup on the other side (after removing the lock ring of course).

Be sure to check out some videos first, so you turn in the right direction!

If you invest in the tools, might as well try to service the cup and cones and reinstall them. They might still be good. I just did the same. Satisfying if it all works out.

I have found it useful to use a threaded rod with washers to clamp the wrench to the fixed cup. It will be very tight and the small flats make it very easy for the wrench to slip off.
