  1. since my pedals are plastic/resin, I ground down the strap side pins, leaving just the very outside and a couple at the toe for a little extra grip. I set my straps fairly tight, so the extra grip the pins would provide isn’t necessary anymore

Straps are dangerous by nature. I’d say that’s a good modification. Get some SPDs

    Dumb as fuck and dangerous!

Do not remove the pins that keep your feet safe on the only braking system u got! The pins are there to secure ur feet safely on the pedals even in rain or when it’s getting slippery. Enjoy hospital when ur feet slip of the pedals while u are trying to break…

I use mtb pedals, and the pins are actually machine screws. The heads of those screws are visible on the opposite side of the pedal. So on the non-strap side, the pins are all the way out (ie:longest/tallest), and on the strap side I can back the screw out a bit so the pins are less aggressive.

It’s all personal preference. I rode mks pedals and cages for years. Those had no pins and I never had an issue. All this stuff is based on the rider and their preferences.

Remember we are all riding a style of bike that was meant to be to be ridden on a track. There really are no rules.

  6. Just loosen your straps a little bit. I’ve never gotten stuck in straps in my life. Granted you went them sort of fitted so you lose any speed but if you’re that worried loosen them a little.

  7. You can smoothen or lower them using a metal file if they are too “sticky” but definitely wouldn’t remove them completely.

The comment section here is really confusing me… I’ve been running straps and pinless pedals since 2008. I suppose it all comes down to personal preference.

I’ve been on straps for about 7-8 months now, using large MTB pedals with the pins in both sides. If I had the straps as snug as I wanted, getting in was a struggle and getting out even more so because the pins would just grip the soles. If I had them a bit looser so I could actually get in and out, they were way too loose and the slop was ridiculous, to the point of my feet feel like they were going to pop out (on a couple of occasions, they did). I took the pins out of the strap side, put griptape on them and then tightened up the straps. I can get in and out easily, slop is minimal and not even close to a foot accidentally slipping out.

People are commenting like they don’t know how to keep their feet on the pedals. If your pedal is slipping off easily with a cage or strap, tighten that shit down! You don’t need to be choking your toes out, you just need there not to be too much slack/lash in the upward direction of your foot. If you have the strap right, then you’ll see that those pins do lock your foot in place. That’s why I use metal pedals that dont have pins but these sort of groove hooks

I live in the PNW and without the pins my feet would just slip off at the wrong time because of the rain.

  12. I’ve been doing this for years without issues, but I do use breaks on both wheels. You just have to make sure your straps are tight enough.

I removed half the pins on my pedals because they were wearing out my shoes. I felt like with or without pins, I was able to unstrap quickly no big deal

I use the grip from the pins to skid and jump. I don’t always use my straps. Guess it’s really all about what you want
