It looks like aa problem with the freewheel body, not the cassette. It could be that bearings in the freehub body have failed, but we don’t know enough about your hub to make a solid diagnosis. The shop is right that it may not be serviceable.

  2. Shop is correct. Prolly lost a bearing or two. They are not hard to replace, or just load in a fresh freehub.

  3. Freehub body had developed play. This amount is what I’d call just above the tolerance. They always have little bit of play due to needing to be able to freewheel. Usually we are looking less than an millimeter with tolerance for cheap ones still being good is somewhere in 1-2mm range when it starts to give problems to shifting.

Unless the wheel is known brand or familiar unbadged oem wheel (aka from a bike they sell) a shop has no way of knowing what is inside and thus only know if it can be repaired and how after they are halfway deep in the maintenance of a hub.

As long as the lock ring is tight. It’s Freehub body play, or missing a spacer in the cassette stack. That does not look like play in the hub bearings to me. It’s common for cheap free hubs to have a little play but that is a little concerning .

Ymmv with replacing a freehub body. Sometimes it’s feasible. Often it’s not worth it because replacement is unobtanium, it would take more time to find than it’s worth, and cost of that and the hub overhaul exceeds price of a new wheel.

All they did was diagnose and you’re fact checking that okay I get that .
But where I come from its BS. They should have said we can fix it for X labor X parts in X amount of time and give you the confidence to okay it and just do it.

But nowadays people shop every repair shop and every diagnosis and ask if they can do it themselves…. plan for when they have the money and time and someone orders the parts . Plus shops have an obligation to tell you whatever else is wrong with the bike so they don’t just fix one thing and deliver it with other problems still unfixed.
