The bearings (or maybe the freehub?) make a little bit of a rumbling noise, and I can feel it when spinning the wheel while holding it so I thought I would have a go at replacing the bearings and cleaning it up. But no idea how to get it apart.

The 2 end bits in picture 4 looked like they were holding things together, but they came off easily and nothing else moves after removing them.

There's no torx or allen pattern on the inside of the axle and I can't pull the hub off.

Does the axle just need hitting with a hammer? I didn't try that since the wheel still works ok as it is 🙂

I did see one reply to a post a few years ago saying that these hubs aren't made to be serviced, but I have also seen a video of one taken apart – but unhelpfully they didn't include the part about actually taking it apart.

Don’t hit axle with hammer, try to pull freehub body, it should came off from hub (with or without axle).
If axle is worn out it will need some tinkering to pull off hub.

  2. Best to use a soft blow hammer or a brass head hammer as to not damage the axle.

Usually, you tap the axle out to the non drive side, the axle will have a shoulder that will pull the left bearing out as the axle comes out.

The free hub body may come free at this point, or it may be bolted to the hub with a large hollow bolt. If bolted, the head of that freehub bolt fits anywhere from a 10 to 15mm hex key.

Once the freehub body is removed, there is likely another cartridge bearing pressed into hub shell, you can use the axle as a punch to remove it.

Replacing the bearing or bearings in the freehub body differs, some use a circlip, some are just pressed in, and you need to remove the black seal to see what’s going on in there

Pressing in new bearings can be tricky without a proper over-axle press, but I’ve seen it done with a mallet and a QR skewer, using the old bearings or appropriately sized sockets as drifts to avoid damage to the new bearings.
