What on earth are you trying to do? There’s plenty of online resources to correctly size your chain.

  2. The derailleurs were thrashed, inoperable. I removed them to use the bike as best I can for the time being.

  3. I’m in a tight spot. I just need some transportation & all I’ve found is this beat up old bike. I need to make it work.

  4. It’s kinda hit miss as you have no means of adjusting the wheel or chain tension. Holding my fingers crossed. What you are hoping for is a stroke of luck that the chain is tensioned enough. Magic gear it out. Let us know how it went.

You’re much better off refitting the derailleurs and limiting them into your chosen gear – derailleurs are great at guiding and tensioning chains. I helped someone do what you’re doing trailside as an emergency fix and it would randomly shift and lock up. Not a fun ride home!

  6. You really needed that rear detailleur tho. Doesnt matter it was badly mangled, you could still use it (or its parts) to provide that much needed tension for the chain, and with just a 10cm shifter cable you could set it to the desired gear. Front chainrings are totally modular as i can see by the bolts, leave only 1 and oriented in reverse so the shifting teeth profile wont help the chain to drop off that easily. Find a desired chainline, and go from there…

  7. I’ve done similar, but with a horizontal dropout that let me move the wheel to tension it. Yours is kind of a gamble and if it looks like you will have slack when eyeballing it you probably will.

no. you need to remount your deraileur and center the deraileur using the limit screws since you have no way of adjusting chain tension.

  9. I did this once on a tour. The RD “exploded” and I lost the idler wheel (if I recall – it was decades ago.) I did this, and rode in one gear far enough to get parts.

That said, I’m pretty sure I picked a better gear ratio – that looks like it’s 1:1. I went for about 3:2.
