The tires worn flat which is a bit sketchy and tries to let go around fast curves but I’m really unsure on the bulge. I’ve got a 20km commute into Melbourne and I was going to pickup a new tire and tube, fit during lunch break…… reckon she’ll be right? I’ve done a hair over 3k commuting kms on this so it’s worn damn well I think.
Don’t mind the oily rim, it’s all degreased now.

Only one way to know for sure.
I reckon it’ll be fine.
The bulge is really suspicious, does it hit something while riding? If so that is going to blow. Can you reduce the bulge by lowering tire pressure a bit to be sure?
It’ll probably be fine. Ride conservatively knowing your tire could blow out at any time.
But actually 3k km for a heavy-duty commuting / touring tire like that is not so great. My schwalbe marathon pluses have probably 12k km and the tread is still pretty well defined — even in the middle.
If there is a flat ridge around the center line of the tire it’s time to replace. The bulge is God’s way of telling you to hurry up.
How have you liked the tires? I saw some in a shop a couple weeks ago and they looked practical at a good price. I blew too much money on fast wearing fancy race tires and I’m considering these for my next set on the road bike.
3k km is an awfully short life for tires. maybe our riding styles are dramatically different but my tires just started to wear out their treads after 10k km.
my guess is they’re still fine, and since it’s the rear tire I wouldn’t worry a ton about it. definitely don’t take any chances on the front though.
