Hey everyone,
I'm looking at a used Trek Domane AL 5 for $1,300. It's ~2 years old, used for a half-Ironman, has some scratches/scuffs, and hasn't had maintenance since the race except pre-race tune-ups.
A little about me: I'm 23 & very fit but l'm relatively new to endurance training. I'm training for my first sprint triathlon and eventually might go longer. I care a lot about quality and longevity when making purchases.
I'd love thoughts on:
– Is this deal worth it?
– Any red flags I should check before buying?- – Would you take this over a new AL 4 or AL5?
– Also, I'm open to recommendations if I should consider a race-oriented geometry bike or a different model – I'm all about buy once, cry once.
Photos attached — thanks in advance!

I personally don’t love the Domane (I know a lot of people do) and would look for an Emonda instead. The new and used bike market is filled with amazing deals right now. Seems like this might be a little high to me at the current moment. If you get it though it’s a quality bike with all kinds of life less. I’m sure you’d love it.
Put some GP5000s
Personally, I would buy it. I’ve got the rim break version and wish I had disc.
A Domane is not going to the best choice for a triathlon. It’s very endurance oriented geometry with an upright position that won’t do you any favors in a race environment. Although it’ll be super comfortable, your body will be a sail, slowing you down. A Madone or even Emonda would both be better suited to triathlon duty. $1300 seems a bit high for an AL framed endurance bike with 105 mechanical and stock wheels. I’d try to find a used aero bike that’s not too beat up and where the previous owner may have added some tasty upgrades.
Great starter bike but I think you should negotiate on price.
They’ve already said it all. I own a Domane AL5 as well, great bike but not triathlon-oriented by any means. There are plenty of bikes better suited for what you want to do. I don’t think the price is too far off, though. But if I were you, I’d pass.
I have the AL5 and love it! But it is not a race bike. Super comfy and fast, but not super fast.
I would not consider that “like new” lol
I got Gen4 with 2×12 105 groupset for 1150€
