Uhm… I don’t know who that is and I’m a little surprised this is still published at least in 2010…
A helmet CAN save your life. It won’t ALWAYS save your life but it can. It will also do it passively, without your input and whether you are conscious of it or not.
Same way a mirror CAN save your life although in a different way to a helmet, by providing information that will allow you to take a life-saving action based on that information.
It’s just dumb, wrong and mis-information to claim in such a bold statement that wearing a helmet will not save your life.

A mirror won’t save my head if I spill on a trail or road from dumb luck/bike handling/whatever. A helmet sure as hell will do better

Not wearing a helmet can end your life. This means wearing a helmet CAN SAVE your life.

i feel as if the message here is that defensive riding is the best way to keep yourself safe, not that helmets are useless. mirrors are equally as important as a helmet on the road imo

Gee whiz I sure wish one could wear a helmet AND have a mirror, but too bad we must choose one or the other.

You can literally tip over or slip and crack your skull, pretty clear that a helmet can save your life.

I’ve seen several cyclists skulls cracked open. All of the ones who wore a helmet lived. Only know of one individual who lived from a cracked skull with no helmet worn and they have the vocabulary of a 3 year old and can barely walk.

The risk of head injury still depends heavily on the situation, e.g. how fast you are riding, environment (trail vs road), surface, etc. Helmets reduce relative risk, but do not eliminate risk e.g. bicycle vs car. The largest meta study (3900 crashes) in Norway suggest 60-70% reduction in head injury while wearing a helmet. I wear a helmet when I’m on the road with traffic or on rough terrain. I don’t wear my helmet when I ride slow bicycle only trails (Katy trail or others) or lonely rural roads. I know there is risk with that strategy but alas one has to understand there is risk in living life the way you want to live.

Clearly the message is being missed by most people here about being observant. Have any of you biked in sketchy parts of the world? For 50 years none the less? Probably not. I’ve biked in some sketchy parts of NYC and Peru, sometimes the best option was to strap the helmet to the bike, throw a flannel on and putts through like I like there to not attract attention, I’ve almost been jump and had a bike stolen. It’s probably the one thing he learned over all those years.

Yes, mirrors can help, but freak accidents occur; a helmet is fundamental. Remaining hyper-vigilant, keeping your head on a swivel, and listening intently (I no longer wear earbuds) are just as important as a mirror and a helmet. I have over 15 years of steady urban commuting experience and have honed an alert state of being when on my bike. Yet accidents occur.
This past spring, I got in a head-on collision with another cyclist. A mirror would have done nothing.
It was at an offset intersection, and I was traveling south, doing a head check for any cars (if I had a mirror, my attention would have been on it). The other cyclist was making a left turn from the street to my right, turning north. She was also checking for traffic coming into her lane from the south. Cars were parked right up to the edge of the turn, blocking both our line of vision to the intersection.
When we both turned our heads back to the road, we were a foot apart. Bam!
I was going almost 20 mph and got tossed right into the ground, where my shoulder and then my helmet took the impact. The helmet saved my life, but not my ribs or shoulder. She was not wearing a helmet, though she remained conscious. I do not know how she impacted the ground, but she left in an ambulance.

Helmets are a personal decision to make. If you are an adult, make that decision for yourself. But I do think a mirror would be better PPE compared to a helmet.

not sure how a rear view mirror/varia/rear light necessarily saves your life, they may lessen some occurrences of accidents but they sure don’t eliminate them. A distracted/drunk/bad driver is still what they are, the only way to be sure they don’t kill you is leave the road upon them approaching and return once they’ve passed. Then there are still the accidents that don’t involve a vehicle at all, or at least not one coming from behind.
A helmet can in fact save your life but, more often, they help retain quality of life which is huge.
