From running a label for a couple of years the label gets the money because they have to pay for art the CDs and everything else and the funds go to the next drop with some pocket money for the trouble. Once an artist gets popping they don't need a label anymore and can do it their selves. That or they choose to use a label so they don't have to handle all that stuff.
Usually without labels you don't get CDs yet everyone hates on labels for trying to help new artist blow up and have physicals and PR.
