back in the early 90s when I started racing it used to be that a cross-country racer would pick a hardtail and a down country or a marathon Rider would pick a full suspension however most of the races in the World Cups these days are running full suspension and I would say most of them are on a hundred mils of travel although Nino shirter did just win his world championship for the 10th time on 120 mil full suspension so I admit the waters are a little murkier these days on distinguishing between the two bikes when it comes to suspension however I would say that 120 to 130 still is pretty commonplace when it comes to speccing a down country bike

  1. I have so many questions.
Why cross country riders would choose hardtail and marathon riders pick full suspension. I see both events as equally long, arduous and require similar set of skills.
Also, if professional riders winning workd championships use 100mm suspension then why some riders are going with 140mm+ suspensions?

  2. Nice video and i thank you for breaking if down!!
Even with the current crypto dip, i am still glad 😊.
I can smile back at mg portfolio lf $53,700 made from my $5k weekly trade within a short period

  3. Xc is in a trail category right now. Gravel bikes moved into the xc category..xc may be in enduro category soon once they resurrect full suspension in gravel bikes …

  4. When i started racing cross-country MTB, HT was all whats needed, many folks even replaced suspension fork to rigid fork. But know courses changed a lot for XC cross-country, and getting more demanding and with gravel category for sure XC now with FS becomes like mandatory for competitive racing.

  5. Another reason is the modern fitness and training has made athletes better, the bike is important but is not the number one reason they win championships, 90% rider 10% bike.

  6. I want a bike to do it all so I'm gonna get a 140 mm light travel trail full sus and put light xc parts on it during race day and my more heavy duty parts on it any other time and it will be a everything bike

  7. Too many micro classes. If you wear lycra you are automatically XC. πŸ˜‚πŸ€£

XC 140 or less travel. 150 and up enduro to dh.

  8. It’s just a matter of time for the market to launch the gravelhill bike because you know, 5mm of travel is a β€œwhole new bike” πŸ™„

  9. First, no, β€œdowncountry” did not exist in the β€œnaughties” or whatever. And second, downcountry isn’t about the travel. An XC race bike and a downcountry bike both can have 120mm suspension. It’s about being slacker, higher front end, and burlier suspension, frames and tires. A bike that’s still fairly light, shorter travel, pedals well, but can handle bigger hits, is more fun/playful, more capable and more comfortable.

  10. Travel weighs zero grams. A SID fork with 130 mm weighs the same as a 100 mm. A Super Deluxe with 25 mm stroke weighs the same as a 35 mm stroke. Hence more travel is better

  11. I'm going to ride a hard tail downhill and Enduro it and have a good time. I'm a regular person not a racer so what they're riding doesnt mean squat to me.
