back in the early 90s when I started racing it used to be that a cross-country racer would pick a hardtail and a down country or a marathon Rider would pick a full suspension however most of the races in the World Cups these days are running full suspension and I would say most of them are on a hundred mils of travel although Nino shirter did just win his world championship for the 10th time on 120 mil full suspension so I admit the waters are a little murkier these days on distinguishing between the two bikes when it comes to suspension however I would say that 120 to 130 still is pretty commonplace when it comes to speccing a down country bike

Lmao
I have so many questions.
Why cross country riders would choose hardtail and marathon riders pick full suspension. I see both events as equally long, arduous and require similar set of skills.
Also, if professional riders winning workd championships use 100mm suspension then why some riders are going with 140mm+ suspensions?
Why does the media only focus on travel. Down Country bikes are slacker than full XC bikes.
Iβm gonna xc race an enduro bike all seasonβ¦
Nice video and i thank you for breaking if down!!
Even with the current crypto dip, i am still glad π.
I can smile back at mg portfolio lf $53,700 made from my $5k weekly trade within a short period

At this rate xc bikes will have 150mm in the next 10 years due to the courses getting harder and bikes getting getter
I love you mammiiiiiiπ
I use a 1970 chopper for down hill races
120mm is the sweet spot imo.
Xc is in a trail category right now. Gravel bikes moved into the xc category..xc may be in enduro category soon once they resurrect full suspension in gravel bikes …
Bike category distinction hasn't changed, it's course terrain which has.
Downcountry is propaganda
Back in the early naughties there was no such thing as down country
When i started racing cross-country MTB, HT was all whats needed, many folks even replaced suspension fork to rigid fork. But know courses changed a lot for XC cross-country, and getting more demanding and with gravel category for sure XC now with FS becomes like mandatory for competitive racing.
In the early noughties marketing hadnβt coined downcountry. People rode βbikesβ
I just don't see the point of 100mm of travel, it's too little IMO
I'm up for correction, but isn't Nino running 130mm suspension?
It's because old school xc courses were boring as. Since more tech and descending have been included, people need more bike.
What kind of sunglasses are those? Pretty sweet
Another reason is the modern fitness and training has made athletes better, the bike is important but is not the number one reason they win championships, 90% rider 10% bike.
Aren't downcountry bikes just trail bikes??? Why not call them that?!
I just want what ever Nino is riding π
I want a bike to do it all so I'm gonna get a 140 mm light travel trail full sus and put light xc parts on it during race day and my more heavy duty parts on it any other time and it will be a everything bike
Wtf is " down country"? Made up name by the Mtb media
almost every 10mm of travel now has its own category
its all marketing
Too many micro classes. If you wear lycra you are automatically XC. ππ€£
XC 140 or less travel. 150 and up enduro to dh.
Itβs just a matter of time for the market to launch the gravelhill bike because you know, 5mm of travel is a βwhole new bikeβ π
Bike companies like to create and categorize many kinds of junk. Bike customers, however, only need one reliable bicycle.
First, no, βdowncountryβ did not exist in the βnaughtiesβ or whatever. And second, downcountry isnβt about the travel. An XC race bike and a downcountry bike both can have 120mm suspension. Itβs about being slacker, higher front end, and burlier suspension, frames and tires. A bike thatβs still fairly light, shorter travel, pedals well, but can handle bigger hits, is more fun/playful, more capable and more comfortable.
Marketing rubbish. 90s MTBing was cross country or downhill
Missy Giovi?
Riding my hardtail XC air front susp makes me still happy, cant imagine a full suspension, gotta try some day
There are no ___-bikes only courses.
XC courses look crazy to me today. Absolute hats off the riders.
Travel weighs zero grams. A SID fork with 130 mm weighs the same as a 100 mm. A Super Deluxe with 25 mm stroke weighs the same as a 35 mm stroke. Hence more travel is better
What on earth is down country?
I'm going to ride a hard tail downhill and Enduro it and have a good time. I'm a regular person not a racer so what they're riding doesnt mean squat to me.
it's mostly depends on the rider whether it's 120mm-130mm they're using. π
Itβs all just marketing bs anyways. Down country is not a race format
