  1. Both those cables look okay visually, do the cables that run underneath the frame feel tight?

  2. Yes, the lever on the left side pulls on the front derailleur, by the pedals, to move the chain on and off the big chainring ( the large gear by the pedals).
    The right hand lever moves the rear derailleur up onto the bigger rear gears(called a cassette). The brake lever on each side moves the chain to the bigger gear and then there’s a smaller lever that releases the chain onto the smaller gears. If it’s not working, a bike shop can fix it easily. Also, the wire cables look attached ok. They are frayed but that won’t affect performance.

    Forgive me if you already know this, but are you familiar with how the Shimano STI shifter system operates? The brake lever and the smaller paddle behind it pivot sideways towards the centerline of the bike. This moves an indexer that moves the shift cables in small increments.
