Sonogno is the last village in the stunning Valle Verzasca, near the Italian-speaking region of Ticino, Switzerland.
🚗 By car: From Locarno, drive about 40 minutes through the scenic Verzasca Valley.
🚌 By public transport: Take a train to Locarno, then hop on Bus 321 which winds up the valley straight to Sonogno.
It’s a magical ride through gorges, rivers, and forests — perfect for a day trip or a quiet retreat.

Nestled in the Verzasca Valley, in the southern part of Switzerland, this is one of the last remote villages tucked away at the very end of the valley. A tiny alpine gem, where time flows as slowly as the mountain streams. Surrounded by seven majestic peaks, this village is a peaceful retreat, shaped by nature, stone, and silence. Sonogno may not be famous—but once you’re here, it feels like you’ve stepped into a storybook. Stone houses, cobbled paths, and flower-filled windows greet you with quiet charm. There are even trout in this clear water. In a world that moves too fast, Sonogno feels like a gentle pause. And maybe that’s exactly what we need sometimes. Take a look around These houses are built from local stone, with thick walls to keep out the cold and wooden balconies for drying herbs and flowers. It’s a building style that has lasted for centuries—and still works perfectly today. A small stone hut stands here, built solely to shelter an outdoor oven. Its blackened walls reveal years of baking fresh bread and local delicacies. You might be surprised to learn that Sonogno is in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland! Did you know Switzerland has four official languages? German, French, Italian, and Romansh! German is spoken mostly in the north and central regions, French in the west, and Italian in the south. Romansh is spoken in only a few parts of the southeast and is quite rare nowadays. It rained last night and again this morning,
and the air here— which is always fresh, is now unbelievably crisp and clean. Wow, look at these beautiful little stone houses! Wouldn’t it be amazing to live in one of these cozy spots? Looks like we’ve reached the village center — a chill spot where people meet, chat, and just enjoy the slow pace of life Here, fresh, cold mountain water greets you everywhere you turn — perfect to refresh yourself on a warm day. You’ll find a few cozy spots where you can buy fresh local goodies — like delicious cheeses made just nearby. The Swiss have a natural eye for beauty and balance, the kind you don’t come across very often It’s not just tidy — it’s artfully done, down to the smallest detail. We’re approaching one of Sonogno’s gems: Chiesa di Santa Maria Lauretana. That tall stone tower? It rises above the village like a quiet guardian. Built in the 1600s and completed with its elegant onion dome in the 1700s, this church feels perfectly at home among the mountains. Now let’s step inside. The walls are covered with delicate paintings that tell the story of Mary’s life, filling the space with a gentle, peaceful spirit. One special detail you’ll notice are the glass doors at the entrance — they let in soft natural light Making the whole interior feel bright and open, like a quiet bridge between the inside and the stunning world outside. And when you step through those doors after the service or after your prayers, you’re greeted by one of the most breathtaking views. The mountains rise proudly all around, and the fresh air, the green hills, and the quiet village below create a peaceful scene. It’s the perfect place to pause and feel connected — to nature, to your thoughts, and to something bigger. Here, meals are more than just food—they’re a celebration of tradition and community. One of the region’s beloved dishes is polenta, a hearty cornmeal dish that has been a staple in Ticino for centuries. Traditionally, it’s cooked over an open fire, stirred slowly to achieve a creamy consistency It’s often served with rich accompaniments like braised meats, wild mushrooms, or local cheeses Another local favorite is bruscitti, a savory beef stew simmered with butter, garlic, and red wine, creating a melt-in-your-mouth experience. The sound of rushing water, fresh mountain air, and lush greenery create a peaceful, almost magical vibe here. In warmer months, there’s even a small osteria nearby where you can relax and enjoy local flavors—though it’s closed in winter What do you think of this wooden bridge? Switzerland is known for its breathtaking views… and breathtaking prices. From accommodation to a simple coffee or a grocery run, everything tends to cost more than in most other European countries That fresh mountain air doesn’t come cheap! But there’s a reason for that. Wages in Switzerland are also much higher. To live comfortably here, a household—especially one with children—typically needs a monthly income of at least 8,000 to 10,000 CHF In cities like Zurich or Geneva, even more. In front of us: the iconic Alpine cows — short legs, big horns, and plenty of charm. Their milk? Turned into local treasures like Raclette, Tomme, and Alpkäse — cheeses packed with mountain flavor. Even the yogurt and cream here taste like fresh air and wildflowers. Along with the crisp mountain air, there’s a sweet surprise — the scent of flowers is everywhere! Those low-hanging clouds wrapping the mountains like a soft mist give everything a dreamy look. All this, just before we arrive at one of the valley’s most iconic sights—the stone bridge over the Verzasca River. Wow—just look at this! We’ve made it to the iconic stone bridge, and right beneath us flows the Verzasca River in all its emerald-green glory Ponte dei Salti, the legendary “jump bridge” of Lavertezzo, and one of the most iconic sights in all of Ticino. Built over 400 years ago, this elegant double-arched stone bridge spans the emerald waters of the Verzasca River like something from a storybook Its graceful curve contrasts beautifully with the wild, untouched nature around it And while it may look like it belongs in a museum, this bridge is anything but quiet… In summer, the Ponte dei Salti becomes a playground Locals and thrill-seekers leap from its arches straight into the cool, crystal-clear waters below Hence the name: “Bridge of Jumps.” Would you dare? And this is the Verzasca River—famous for its emerald green waters. It’s so clear, you can see every pebble at the bottom The river’s crystal clear, inviting you to peek beneath and discover its sparkling surprises.
