Wow – I remember asking a bike shop attendant once, well how strong are these. He kind of sneered at me and said something about car timing belts and 75k miles on one of those so I never expected to see this happen in the wild.
Interesting because there is no way to fix that at all

That stinks, but a good lesson to carry a spare of any essential component! As well, for a touring or bikepacking set up, I think it’s a good idea to use parts that can be easily fixed in the field. I’m sure others disagree, but for me that means rim brakes, friction shifting, traditional chain, a rear hub I can remove the cassette from without a special tool etc.
