We got a helmet for our 18 month old. He's a big boy and has got a large head, it's always been 95%. Last it was measured a few weeks ago it was 19.5". We got him this (https://www.giro.com/product/scamp-ii-helmet/100000001400000362.html) helmet in an xs. But we have it extended all the way out and it seems like it's riding high. The next size up (size small) says it's rated for children 5 and older. What should we do- do we get the next size up?

  1. Use the sizing chart?

    Youth Size Circumference
    XS 45 – 51 cm
    S 49 – 55 cm
    Universal Child 47 – 54 cm
    Universal Youth 50 – 57 cm

  2. The helmet is too small.

Fitted correctly, the front of the helmet should leave a gap of no more than “two fingers” between the brow ridge and the bottom edge of the helmet. The “two fingers” is not an objective measurement, but relative to the size of the rider: in the case of your wee one, that’s probably the width of *one* of your fingers. It shouldn’t come down lower than the brow ridge, either.

At the opposite end—making sure it’s not too big—the helmet should “stay put” without buckling the chin strap when inverting the head (ie going upside down). That doesn’t mean you don’t set whatever adjustment knobs on the back to “dial in” the fit; it means that once you’ve adjusted everything, but before snapping the chin strap, that it doesn’t immediately fall off when inverted.

Way too small. Age ratings on kids products don’t mean anything, the right size is the right size.
