Do you know why there’s no bridge connecting Sicily and mainland Italy?

The two are separated by the Strait of Messina, which is just 3 kilometers at its narrowest point. That’s four times shorter than Portugal’s 12-kilometer Vasco da Gama Bridge and almost 17 times shorter than the 50-kilometer Channel Tunnel linking the UK and France. So, what’s stopping Italy from building a bridge here?
You see, the Strait of Messina lies on a fault line between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, which is why, in 1908, the region experienced a catastrophic 7.1 magnitude earthquake—one of the deadliest in European history—highlighting the extreme seismic risks of the area.
But that’s not the only challenge. The strait’s narrow shape funnels strong southerly winds, accelerating them to speeds of up to 120 kph; making constructing a bridge here, even riskier.
And if that wasn’t enough, critics argued that such a project could waste public funds or even benefit the Italian mafia.
Yet, despite all this, Italy is finally moving forward with building what will be the world’s longest suspension bridge ever.

  2. you forgot to say that since it has to be above a fault, the depth is many km underwater, therefore piling would be very difficult, which is why the bridge project foresees a single span!! the bridges you mentioned which are much longer surely rest on more spans! to date this bridge would be the largest in the world with a single span, the second is in Turkey and is half as long!!!

  3. No One is talking about gioia tauro's port, 2nd biggest in Italy, and right under it lies Palmi, my hometown. I live at via scinà 158, my house number is 27. Come visit me sometime (im not capping)

  4. Guys i'm italian and also Calabrese that is ome of the two regions that involve thi bridge we could say,in fact it would connect Sicily and Calabria, and my brothers are both engineers and another fact why they can't build it is also because no matter how stron it is it will probably "fall" probably while building it or in not too long time

  5. i live in Reggio Calabria, which Is the closest city to the straight of Messina and i can confirm that the most of the people doesn't want It because It would destroy so much Animals and plants that live there

  6. The problem is not politics, magic or money, the real problem is that the bridge would be built between the African and European aquifers and technically the safety of people cannot be guaranteed.

  7. Im italian and live there
The real reason is that "Caronte & Tourist" the company that ships people and obgect, is the only one that there if they build a brigde they will fail

  8. Make a bridge that has resistance to wind and earthquake, make it also undestructable and durable, not a standard bridge design but futuristic materials made of not cement blocks but also cauble stones, rocks, platinum and aluminum metals, and titanium aloys and strongest girthy ropes like the one that used on huge boat ships

  9. Anti italians (inferiority complex people) still thinking we can't do that….they have spent decades telling us that the flood barrier to save venice (mose) entirely built by us italians was useless…reality:mosed is working since 3 years and saved venice from several catastrophic floods, you will cry again😂….LET'S BUILD THE BRIDGE
