I'm thinking of installing a sliding unistrut kind of thing for bike storage, similar to the Stashed Space Rail (this is their photo). This rails allow you to slide bikes back and forth, compressing them when not being accessed, then you slide them to an open space to pull one down.

Can anyone who's used such a thing share how much space they need per bike (both total rail space and when bikes are compressed)?

I have six adult bikes with an anticipated two kid bikes to store. I'm wondering if I can get them to fit compressed in 7 feet and if 9 feet total rail length would be long enough to allow room to put them up and down.

Details for the curious: I'd store the bikes compressed in an area of blank wall then extend the rail in front of a door for "free" temporary space to shuffle bikes up and down.

I am in metricland, so I can’t comment on the size of your feet – but my 3-meter-rail is very relax with 6 bikes, still very usable with 8. If you watch out to hang bikes top/bottom alternatively, you can get them really close together.

Watch out that you have access to the full rail. If you just have one spot on one side where you can access the bikes, you’ll have trouble sliding them all over, so you will end up removing a few just to get to the one you need. Might be ok if you can hang them based on frequency of use…

  2. I have an 8 ft box rail from Lowe’s and get 7 bikes on there, gotta alternate which tire you hang from so bars are offset.  That’s 6 bikes with 650b or 700c wheels and one 24in bike.
