Welcome to Garmisch Partenkirchen. A jewel of the Bavarian Alps whose story spans centuries. This alpine town lies at the foot of the mighty Zugspitze. Germany’s highest peak. Its history begins long before the two villages became one. The valley was settled by Celts more than two thousand years ago. The Romans arrived around the first century AD. They built a military road called Via Raetia to connect Italy with Augsburg. Along this road the small settlement of Partanum. Today’s Partenkirchen. Grew as a trading post. Its strategic position brought merchants and travelers. But also soldiers and taxes. Meanwhile the area that became Garmisch was more rural. Known for its fertile meadows and alpine pastures. During the Middle Ages both villages fell under the rule of the Prince Bishops of Freising. Christianity shaped daily life. Partenkirchen thrived on trade and hosted lively markets. Garmisch focused on farming and livestock. By the sixteenth century both communities suffered from wars and plague. Yet their alpine spirit endured. In the eighteenth century Bavarian rule replaced the bishops. New roads and inns welcomed increasing travelers. Romantic era painters and poets discovered the dramatic peaks and valleys. Tourism slowly took root. The arrival of the railway in 1889 changed everything. Visitors from Munich and beyond could reach the Alps in comfort. Grand hotels and guesthouses appeared. Mountain guides led daring climbs on the Wetterstein range. Winter sports followed soon after. Skiing and ice skating turned the quiet villages into lively resorts. By the early twentieth century Garmisch and Partenkirchen competed fiercely for tourists. Each hosted festivals and sporting events. In 1935 the Nazi government ordered the two towns to merge. Preparing for the 1936 Winter Olympics. Despite political tension the games introduced the world to their breathtaking alpine setting. Ski jumps. Ice rinks. And the dramatic backdrop of the Zugspitze captured global attention. After World War Two Garmisch Partenkirchen became part of the American occupation zone. Tourism helped rebuild the economy. The town hosted U.S. military recreation centers. English echoes joined Bavarian dialects in local cafés. Throughout the 1950s and 60s winter sports flourished. Ski races and championships drew crowds from across Europe. Cable cars to the Zugspitze opened spectacular high alpine vistas to ordinary visitors. Hiking trails and mountain huts offered summer adventures. Tourism became a year round lifeline. Traditional Bavarian culture remained strong. Residents proudly wear dirndls and lederhosen for festivals. Every February the historic Fasching carnival fills the streets with masks music and dance. The annual New Year’s Ski Jumping competition attracts thousands of fans to the Olympic Hill. Environmental awareness grew in the late twentieth century. Efforts protect the pristine alpine environment. Today Garmisch Partenkirchen balances tradition with modern tourism. Wellness resorts stand beside centuries old farmhouses. Visitors come for skiing hiking and the crisp mountain air. But also to taste Bavarian hospitality. Historic Ludwigstrasse in Partenkirchen still shows colorful Lüftlmalerei frescoes on medieval buildings. The Werdenfels Museum preserves artifacts from Roman times to the Olympic era. Nearby the Partnach Gorge reveals roaring waterfalls and icy sculptures in winter. High above. The Alpspitze and Zugspitze invite climbers and skiers to challenge the peaks. Through centuries of change the twin town remains a gateway to the wonders of the Bavarian Alps. Its story is one of resilience. From Roman traders to Olympic athletes. Garmisch Partenkirchen shows how nature culture and history can flourish together. Thank you for joining this journey through time in Germany’s alpine treasure.

This brought back memories. I was there in 1963, in November. It was wintry, and we went to the top of the Zugspitze. Over 60 years ago.
This looks like a nice relaxing place.

Beautiful Evening walk 💕
I really like the frescos, some look quite simple and some are really detailed and expansive. Very varied as to content, it would be worth a visit just to get a closer and longer look at them. Thank you. I like that the Alps are quite visible from most areas. Interesting statuary, lots of balconies; a nice mix of architecture.
COZY 😟

This place is beautiful. Those houses are astonishing. 🤩🤩🤩
