    my BF is showing me how to shop like a true German don’t want your fragile groceries get squished protect them with a carton box when checking out put heavy stuff first then lightweight stuff same logic here but make it Lego style help is even faster than the cashier quick and effective

      It's a game with my lidl cashiers, here in south of France. Are you faster than me ?
      I have an advantage : I place the purchases on the conveyor belt in the correct order to quickly put them in the bags. But some cashiers have understood the trick and mix everything up for me.

      Leaving weighed stuff and individual baked goods to the end helps to buy you extra packing time when you need it most. Also spacing things on the conveyor belt s bit more.

      A trolley, i also use a carton box in bottom,
      then packing Tetris style (extra reusable bag if needed)
      and always have an extra strap for security
      we call trolly Dramaten=''foodpuller''

      I shop at Aldi. I've been a customer for more than 40 years. Their cashiers are incredibly fast.
      I'm fairly organised at check out, but it's always a bit of a competition.
      (There are occasions where I know I won't stand a chance, then I resign, accepting the fact that I will have to "Lego-pack" my bags later. (btw nice simile)

      I think anyone who shops enough learn to do this but properly not as effective as an German. You have to be a low IQ to put your heavy stuff last if you plan on carrying it.

      I always just put my things back in the shopping cart first and after paying I sort it all out in the area that is specially assigned for that. I always think of Tetris when I'm packing my backpack.

      True test: divide it by temperature/place where you keep it. All the stuff for the freezer in one bag, the fridge stuff in another and the "room temperature" where ever your Tetris-Fu tells you to.

      As an American that worked as a cashier back in the day, this all seems normal to me. We were trained to be fast and bag items correctly, efficiently. Knowing how it should be bagged also leads to correctly placing items on the conveyor belt (i.e. frozen with frozen, veg with veg, cleaning supplies/chemicals separate, fragile items on top, etc). If you're not accustomed to it, I can see how it could seem hectic, especially when bagging yourself.
