I just got a new bike and realized when I got home that there is no end on the bottom bracket. Is there supposed to be one? Maybe to stop mud and dust from getting in? My previous bike had one so this is new to me, sorry if it’s a stupid question.

Definitely missing, go back to the shop and demand they put one on
It’s called a hollow-shaft to save weight due to the large diameter. Nothing to worry about. You can buy a toolkit that fits in there, neat huh?
That hole doesn’t lead to the bearings you’re worried about protecting. It’s just the hollow crankshaft, it’s blocked by a bolt holding the other crank in position on the other side
